Harare magistrate Mr. Dennis Mangosi has denied bail to Elizabeth Parerenyatwa Mucheche, who faces charges of perjury and threatening to kill a businessman involved in her perjury case. The decision, delivered by Magistrate Mr. Sheunesu Matova, came after the arresting officer outlined several reasons for opposition to bail.
Detective Inspector Evidence Hanya detailed the circumstances of Mucheche’s arrest, explaining that she had initially claimed to be out of the country when invited to the Highlands Police Station. The detective learned of her true location after receiving a tip-off, which led to her being located at the CID Commercial Crimes Division in Harare. When approached, Mucheche resisted arrest, forcing police to call for additional assistance from the public to escort her to the station.
The detective also expressed concern that Mucheche might interfere with witnesses, as investigations are still underway. Mucheche is alleged to have submitted a fraudulent power of attorney to the Master of the High Court, which was purportedly signed by the late Anne Rhodes. Additionally, there are discrepancies in the document’s spelling and a death certificate indicating that Rhodes had passed away before the power of attorney was allegedly signed.
In defense, Mucheche’s legal team argued that she was a suitable candidate for bail, citing her fixed abode and lack of evidence proving she had evaded authorities. The defense also contended that the allegations against her were unsubstantiated.
The charges stem from an incident in October 2022, when Mucheche allegedly created a fake power of attorney document, despite not being related to the deceased or legally appointed as the executor of the estate. The second charge involves her threatening businessman Brian Murphy with death after he reported her for perjury.
