A gang of 10 armed robbers, wielding three AK-47 assault rifles and a pistol, carried out a daring raid on a business in Bulawayo, stealing US$7,000 and R18,000.
The suspects first overpowered six security guards stationed at the premises before breaking into the offices and using grinders to force open cash safes. The police have launched a manhunt for the gang, which remains at large.
Police Seek Public Assistance
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and called on the public to assist in the investigation.
“Police in Bulawayo are appealing for information that may assist in the investigation of a robbery that occurred on December 6, 2024, at a business premise in Western Commonage,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He detailed the gang’s actions: “The suspects attacked six security guards on duty before gaining entry into the offices, where they broke into safes and stole US$7,000 and R18,000. Anyone with information is urged to report to the nearest police station.”
Rise in Armed Robberies
The Bulawayo robbery adds to a growing number of armed heists recorded across Zimbabwe. In Harare alone, over 650 armed robberies have been reported so far this year, compared to 466 cases during the same period last year.
Robberies targeting premises manned by security guards have also surged, with 106 incidents reported this year compared to 57 in 2023.
Nationally, robberies without firearms or weapons show a slight decline, with 973 cases recorded this year compared to 1,073 last year. However, the number of attacks on locations guarded by security personnel rose from 31 cases in 2023 to 46 this year.
Recent High-Profile Robberies
Armed robberies targeting businesses and residences have become increasingly brazen.
- In Harare’s Vainona suburb, three armed robbers recently stole over US$36,200 from a company after attacking the security guard and breaking into the office safe. They also made off with laptops and a Bluetooth speaker.
- In Greendale, Harare, a family was terrorized by three armed robbers who stole US$12,200, electronic devices, and a digital video recorder.
- Earlier in October, an audacious heist at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo saw robbers flee with US$4.4 million in broad daylight.
Arrests and Investigations
Police have had some success in tackling the wave of robberies. Recently, 24-year-old Bright Chikomo was arrested in connection with a robbery at a house in Eastview, Mabvuku. During the robbery, a couple was attacked, and US$30, two cellphones, and a blanket were stolen. The victim identified Chikomo, leading to his arrest and the recovery of a knife in his possession. However, his accomplice, known only as “Digital,” remains on the run.
