Highlanders secured a commanding 3-0 victory over GreenFuel yesterday, advancing to the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals in what was one of their most dominant home performances this season.
The win was a much-needed boost for coach Kelvin Kaindu, who acknowledged that his team had been struggling at home in recent league matches.
Highlanders’ persistence paid off right before half-time, when Melikhaya Ncube scored with a close-range tap-in, though GreenFuel protested, believing Ncube to be offside. The referee, however, allowed the goal to stand, leading to heated protests from the visitors. GreenFuel’s goalkeeper Tendai Chirara and Reginald Chinemo were both booked for their reactions.
Highlanders doubled their lead in the 64th minute with a superb turn and shot from Ndlovu inside the box. Marvelous Chigumira then sealed the win in the 80th minute, converting from a Ndlovu pass inside the area.

Reflecting on the match, Kaindu expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, noting the importance of scoring three goals. “It was a tough game. The opponents were tactically sound, and we had trouble breaking through at first. Once we scored, the match opened up for us. I’m pleased with the result, especially since we haven’t managed to score three goals in a game before today,” he said.
However, the victory came with some challenges as Bosso had to make several changes due to injuries, including an early substitution of goalkeeper Raphael Pitisi, who was forced off with what appeared to be a knee injury. Ariel Sibanda replaced Pitisi after 22 minutes, receiving a warm reception from the Bosso faithful.
GreenFuel coach Saul Chaminuka felt that the first goal was the turning point of the match, particularly because he believed it was offside. “That first goal changed everything. It disrupted the game, and it’s hard to assess our players’ performance after that,” Chaminuka said.
The match saw Bosso control much of the early play, with Chigumira creating chances and Brighton Ncube coming close to scoring. GreenFuel had their moments, notably when Brian Chikwenya forced a strong save from Sibanda, but they couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
Despite GreenFuel’s efforts, Highlanders’ clinical finishing and resolute defense secured their place in the next round, with Kaindu hoping this strong showing can carry over into their league campaign.
