Inmate Reveals How Easy It Was To Escape Chikurubi

Mikia Pirikisi, a prisoner who escaped from Chikurubi Prison, has disclosed the shocking ease with which he was able to break free from custody.

In his recent appearance before Harare magistrate Munashe Chibanda, Pirikisi pleaded guilty to several charges, including escaping from lawful custody, robbery, and malicious damage to property.

Pirikisi narrated that while he and other inmates were herding cattle at the prison farm in Gletwin, they were unguarded, and he saw an opportunity to break free. An altercation with a passerby created a commotion, which Pirikisi took advantage of, enabling him to escape from custody.

“We got into an altercation with a passer-by and chased after him, and that is when I realised that I had a chance to escape and took advantage of that opportunity,” he said, according to H-Metro.

After Pirikisi’s escape, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service officer Bright Musekiwa led a team of officers to search for the escapees in the Gletwin area, but they were unable to locate them. Pirikisi’s arrest in Beitbridge last month led to his return to Chikurubi Prison. It was later discovered that he had committed several crimes while on the run, including robbery and malicious damage to property.

According to the State, Pirikisi broke into Tendai Mudzamire’s house in Chishawasha Hills, still wearing prison garb, on November 7 last year.

He struck Mudzamire with a brick on the face, tied his wife and children with a rope, and ransacked the house in search of valuables.

He allegedly stole a wallet containing US$60, three cellphones, two pairs of shoes, a satchel, and a suitcase before fleeing.

Pirikisi was also charged with malicious damage to property for attempting to break into Ronald Mapamula’s house by breaking a window, along with two other people.
