Overview:
The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship is available to exceptional applicants from developing countries who demonstrate a need for financial support. The scholarship is specifically for the Master of Science in Sustainability Programme at United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).

Scholarship Coverage/Duration:
The JFUNU scholarship includes a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. Tuition fees may also be waived for scholarship recipients. However, students are responsible for travel costs to and from Japan, visa fees, and health/accident insurance.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants for the Master of Science in Sustainability Programme must meet the following requirements by the application deadline:
- Hold a completed bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university in a sustainability-related field (applicants expecting to receive their degree before September 2024 may also apply).
- Maintain a GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale (equivalent to 70% on a 100% scale) for their bachelor’s degree.
- Demonstrate English language proficiency with minimum scores: TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT): 600, TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (IBT): 100, IELTS – Academic: 7.0.
Scholarship Requirements:
- Applicants must be from developing countries and show a financial need.
- Applicants currently residing in Japan under a working visa are ineligible.
- Applicants enrolled in other postgraduate degree programs or who already hold a master’s degree (except from UNU-IAS) are not eligible.
- Applicants cannot receive other scholarships simultaneously.

Applicants must submit their official admissions application through the online form. Exceptional candidates from developing countries with demonstrated financial need will automatically be considered for the JFUNU scholarship during the admission selection process. Therefore, a separate scholarship application is unnecessary. The application deadline is 25 February 2024 (23:59 Japan Standard Time).
