Mary Mubaiwa, the former wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, appeared in court on Tuesday in a wheelchair, following the recent amputation of her left leg and right hand. Her condition has sharply deteriorated, prompting her to request a permanent stay of prosecution in her ongoing legal battle.
During the court session at the Harare Magistrates Court, Mubaiwa’s lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, argued that her client’s severe health issues have made it impossible for her to actively engage in her defense. “Her health has worsened to the point where she is unable to participate in her trial,” Mtetwa explained. “The pain, combined with the heavy sedation she is under and her reliance on medication, has significantly impaired her ability to communicate and follow legal proceedings.”
Mubaiwa, who once held a prominent role in Zimbabwe’s social circles, has been facing multiple charges since the collapse of her marriage to Chiwenga, including accusations of attempted murder, fraud, and money laundering, all of which she has denied. Despite her ongoing legal troubles, Mubaiwa has consistently maintained her innocence.
Her health has deteriorated due to a rare medical condition, which led to the amputation of both her leg and hand. In her plea to the court, Mtetwa emphasized that given Mubaiwa’s severe physical and mental conditions, continuing the trial would be both inhumane and legally unsound.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Mubaiwa’s health remains a central concern, with her defense team urging the court to take her medical condition into account before making further decisions.
