The refurbished National Sports Stadium has officially been handed over to Government by Sakunda Holdings following a major rehabilitation exercise aimed at bringing the facility back to international football standards.

The stadium was shut down in 2023 after failing to satisfy CAF requirements, prompting extensive renovation works. Upgrades carried out at the venue include the installation of a new playing surface, bucket seats, revamped changing rooms, improved dugouts, and a newly designed players’ tunnel.

Zimbabwean politician Anselem Sanyatwe said the facility is now prepared to host local football matches again.

“The stadium is now ready for domestic football activities,” said Sanyatwe.

Sakunda also confirmed that 44,000 bucket seats were fitted during the refurbishment programme as part of efforts to improve safety and spectator comfort.

Nqobile Magwizi welcomed the development, saying the reopening of the stadium moves Zimbabwe closer to hosting international matches on home soil once again after years of playing outside the country.

The National Sports Stadium, which now has a safe seating capacity of 44,000, is expected to undergo final finishing works and a CAF inspection before it can fully resume hosting international fixtures.
