Neville Mutsvangwa’s case has proven too heavy to handle as High Court Judge Esther Muremba has recused herself from delivering the much-awaited judgment, citing personal reasons.
This politically sensitive case has already stirred significant controversy and tension within the ruling party. As a result, the bail application will now be heard by another judge.
Justice Muremba, who had already heard submissions from both parties’ legal counsel, was expected to deliver her ruling today. However, she announced her recusal from the matter, referring the case to Judge President of the High Court of Zimbabwe, Justice Mary Dube, for reassignment.
Mutsvangwa faces charges of illegal foreign currency dealings and possession of an unlicensed Starlink router. He was denied bail by Harare Magistrate Denis Mangosi and was remanded in custody until May 30, along with his two accomplices.
The court heard that the police encountered resistance during Mutsvangwa’s arrest. Initially, he denied the police entry to his Mt Pleasant home.

When officers cut his electric fence and climbed over his gate, they had to search the premises before eventually finding him hiding between a precast wall and a pile of sacks.
Simultaneously, another team of detectives visited the Mumba Money Transfer office in the city center, where one Majachani was serving clients. The police recovered US$3,890 in cash, several computers, a transaction register, and over 20 Visa cards.
The State opposed bail on the grounds that Mutsvangwa and his accomplices are facing serious charges.
