SeedCo Vegetables Champions Disease-Resistant Crops Amid Challenging Weather Conditions

Harare, Zimbabwe — In response to the intensifying impact of prolonged rains and the resulting spike in crop diseases, SeedCo Vegetables is stepping up with a bold solution: advanced seed varieties engineered for resistance against destructive pathogens threatening Zimbabwe’s agricultural output.

Recent months have seen excessive rainfall across the country, creating ideal conditions for the outbreak of several high-impact plant diseases. Cauliflower has been hit by Black Rot, onions by Purple Blotch, tomatoes by Late Blight, and carrots by the resurgence of Alternaria. These diseases are not only undermining crop health but also threatening food security and farmer incomes.

Recognising this growing threat, SeedCo Vegetables is introducing disease-resistant genetics specifically developed to perform under such adverse conditions.

“These emerging diseases are not just agricultural issues—they’re economic and food security concerns,” stated Patrick Mtandwa, General Manager of SeedCo Vegetables, during the company’s Vegetables Field Day held on Thursday. “Our new varieties are purposefully bred to withstand today’s complex disease pressures, particularly in seasons like this when the weather is working against us.”

The Field Day, which brought together farmers, agronomists, and other stakeholders, served as a platform to showcase crop varieties that have thrived despite being planted during one of the most challenging growing seasons in recent years. The demonstration highlighted not only the genetic strength of these varieties but also the critical importance of pairing them with sound agronomic practices.

“Good seed is only part of the equation,” said Mtandwa. “Farmers must also prioritise skilled farm management and adopt best practices to unlock the full potential of these resilient crops.”

To reinforce this message, SeedCo Vegetables presented a series of new and improved varieties, including two coded tomato lines developed specifically for open-field conditions. These are part of the company’s ongoing investment in research and development to bring climate-resilient and disease-tolerant solutions to market.

Mtandwa also stressed the importance of data-backed farming decisions. “We encourage farmers to shift toward improved varieties that have been rigorously tested under local conditions. Our products are not only genetically superior but are supported by real-world performance data,” he said.

As unpredictable weather patterns become more frequent, SeedCo Vegetables’ focus on disease-resistant crops offers a lifeline to farmers seeking stability and sustainability in their operations. By delivering solutions rooted in science and supported by strong agronomic partnerships, the company continues to position itself at the forefront of agricultural resilience in Zimbabwe.
