SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – A 31-year-old Zimbabwean man, Michael Charumbira, has been arrested and charged with plotting to import an estimated 896 kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia worth a staggering US$538 000.
According to a report by Sky News Australia, Charumbira was arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) at a Warwick Farm property in south-west Sydney.
This followed an anonymous tip off received from the United States’ Homeland Security Investigations which tied large drug shipments to a Sydney based store.
The methamphetamine was hidden inside packages contained within two separate computer numerical control (CNC) machines.

Charumbira has since appeared at the Downing Centre Local Court on August 1 after his initial arrest on Wednesday 31 July 2024.
Its still not known if the drugs were manufactured in Mexico or the United States but its likely they were intended to be distributed “across the eastern seaboard” in Australia.
Australian Federal Police Detective Superintendent Peter Fogarty told Sky News Australia that “Methamphetamine is the second-most consumed illicit drug in Australia and its impact can be felt across the community, from our homes to our hospitals.”
“Criminal syndicates go to great lengths to conceal their activities, but that will never deter the AFP and its domestic and international partners. We will find those responsible and bring them before the courts,” Det-Supt Fogarty said.
