Harare, Zimbabwe – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conveyed profound sorrow and grief following the demise of Ambassador Victor Matemadanda, Zimbabwe’s esteemed envoy to Mozambique and Eswatini. The President lauded Cde Matemadanda as a devoted veteran of the liberation struggle, whose indelible contributions to the nation’s independence, governance, and preservation of national heritage will resonate for generations to come.
In a heartfelt message issued on Monday, President Mnangagwa articulated his deep sadness upon learning of the untimely passing of Cde Matemadanda, who was 66 years old and departed on Sunday morning.
The President recounted Ambassador Matemadanda’s early political awakening and involvement in the national liberation movement, which began during his youth. As a member of the Zimbabwean migrant community residing in Zambia, seeking refuge from persecution in then-Rhodesia, he embraced the cause of freedom.
President Mnangagwa remarked, “He willingly exchanged the relatively tranquil and prosperous existence within the successful Zimbabwean migrant community in Zambia for the arduous path of struggle.”
Initially, the late diplomat collaborated with other prominent nationalists, including the late Cde Patrick Kombayi, to galvanize support for liberation fighters and refugees in camps situated in Zambia and Mozambique.
Subsequently, Cde Matemadanda’s engagement in the liberation struggle intensified, as he directly participated in critical operations, including the logistical support of war materials. He was instrumental in transporting these vital supplies using heavy-duty Scania trucks to various operational zones.
President Mnangagwa expressed regret that the nation has lost the distinguished diplomat before he could bring to fruition a significant project that had commanded his full dedication and energy.
“Under my direct guidance, the Second Republic is committed to ensuring the rehabilitation and proper curation of these revered sites and shrines. This endeavor represents the least we can do to honor our fallen heroes and to pay enduring tribute to the late Cde Matemadanda,” the President affirmed.
The Head of State extended his deepest condolences to the Matemadanda family, characterizing the Ambassador’s passing as a profound national loss.
“On behalf of the Party, ZANU PF, the Government, my Family, and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest, heartfelt condolences to the bereaved Matemadanda family, especially Amai Matemadanda and the children, in this their hour of profound grief,” President Mnangagwa stated.
The President urged all Zimbabweans to find solace in Ambassador Matemadanda’s extraordinary commitment to the liberation and advancement of Zimbabwe.
“Our nation stands in solidarity with them and shares in their sorrow. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace,” concluded the President.
Ambassador Matemadanda, who served with distinction as Zimbabwe’s representative to Mozambique and Eswatini, is being mourned across all strata of Government, the liberation war veterans’ community, and diplomatic circles. Funeral arrangements are anticipated to be announced in due course.
