In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the instigator of a failed coup on Sunday has been slain, and approximately 50 individuals, including three Americans, have been apprehended, according to an army spokesperson.
Gunshots were heard around 4 a.m. in the capital, Kinshasa, with armed assailants targeting the presidential residence and the nearby home of Vital Kamerhe, a prospective parliament speaker.
The attack on Kamerhe’s residence resulted in the deaths of two guards and one attacker. Meanwhile, a shell fired from Kinshasa struck Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, causing injuries.
The leader of the attempted coup, identified as Christian Malanga, was reportedly eliminated during the assault on the Palais de la Nation. Malanga, a Congolese politician based in the United States, had previously attempted a coup in 2017.

A Facebook page purportedly belonging to Malanga streamed a video of the attack, in which he voiced grievances against the current leadership. U.S. Ambassador Lucy Tamlyn expressed concern over reports implicating American citizens in the unrest, pledging cooperation with Congolese authorities in their investigation.
The United Nations’ mission in the DRC denounced the incidents, offering support to the Congolese government. President Tshisekedi, re-elected for a second term, is yet to form a government, and parliamentary speaker elections, where Kamerhe is a candidate, have been postponed.
