Education Ministry Slams Directive for Learners to Fund National Event

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has strongly criticized a directive requiring schoolchildren to contribute up to $1 each toward the 2025 Independence Day celebrations in Nembudziya, stating that it is unauthorized and not aligned with ministry policy.

The directive, issued by the Gweru District Schools Inspector, instructed schools to collect funds from learners and deposit them into a BSPZ account. The money was intended to cover regalia, food, and fuel expenses for the 205 students, 20 teachers, and 138 school heads expected to attend the celebrations on April 18, 2025.

However, the ministry has distanced itself from the directive, stressing that the government has already allocated funds through the national budget for all Independence Day commemorations, including those in Gokwe. It emphasized that no additional contributions are required from schools, learners, parents, or the community.

In a March 26, 2025 statement, the ministry condemned the request, labeling it as unauthorized, unwarranted, and against official policy. It reaffirmed that no financial burdens should be placed on learners or institutions for national events.

The ministry has launched an investigation into the matter, with the responsible official expected to justify their actions, which violate established procedures. Disciplinary measures will be taken if necessary.

Additionally, the ministry directed all school heads, teachers, and stakeholders to disregard the directive and instructed that no payments should be collected. It urged anyone facing pressure to contribute to report the matter immediately.

Apologizing for any concern caused, the ministry assured the public that steps were being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. It reiterated that Independence Day is a time for national unity, and citizens should celebrate freely without financial obligations.
