Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini, Dr. Victor Matemadanda, has died.

Reports indicate that Ambassador Matemadanda passed away on Saturday night, bringing to an end a long career that spanned the liberation struggle, national politics, government service and diplomacy.

His death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, war veterans, diplomats and ordinary Zimbabweans who remembered him as a committed public servant and liberation war veteran.

Ambassador Matemadanda was serving as Zimbabwe’s envoy to Mozambique, a position he assumed in 2021 after a distinguished political career that included serving as Deputy Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, Member of Parliament for Gokwe Central, ZANU-PF National Political Commissar and Secretary-General of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association.

Throughout his diplomatic tenure, he played a key role in strengthening relations between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, two countries whose histories are closely intertwined through the liberation struggle. He was also actively involved in initiatives aimed at preserving and rehabilitating liberation war shrines and memorial sites in Mozambique.

In recent years, Ambassador Matemadanda frequently represented Zimbabwe at regional and bilateral engagements and remained an influential voice on issues relating to liberation heritage, regional cooperation and Zimbabwe-Mozambique relations.

Condolence messages began circulating shortly after news of his passing emerged.

One message described his death as “a deeply saddening loss” and conveyed condolences to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom Ambassador Matemadanda represented in his diplomatic assignment, as well as to his family, friends, colleagues and the nation at large.

Born on 3 March 1960, Matemadanda was a veteran of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and remained active in public life for decades after independence.

His political and public service career saw him occupy several influential positions within government, Parliament and ZANU-PF before his appointment to the diplomatic service.

At the time of publication, Government had not yet released details regarding funeral arrangements and official mourning programmes.

More details were expected as family members, Government officials and diplomatic representatives continued consultations following his passing.
