The trial of cult leader Madzibaba Ishmael Chokurongerwa is set to commence today, with the prosecution adding further charges against him.
Initially detained for violating Section 3(1) and (2) of the Burial and Cremation Act 5:03 and Section 7(1) and (5) of the Children’s Act 5:06, Madzibaba Ishmael now faces accusations of raping five minors, resulting in six offspring. The victims’ ages ranged from 13 to 16 at the time of the incidents, believed to have occurred between 2018 and his arrest in March this year.
Appearing before Magistrate Christine Nyandoro, Madzibaba Ishmael’s trial is urged to proceed promptly, as directed in the previous hearing. His legal counsel, Purity Chikangaise, has warned of a motion to refuse further remand if the trial does not commence today.

Madzibaba Ishmael is co-defendant with Takavengwa Gwenzi, Siribiniyo Chikunire, Wonder Kabaya, Devlodge Katsande, Zebediah Sigudu, Aaron Chokurongerwa, and Shingirai Ngavafume. While Madzibaba Ishmael was granted US$1,000 bail by the High Court last month, his co-accused are currently out on bail.
Maintaining his innocence, Madzibaba Ishmael contends that the charges against him are fabricated, emphasizing his entitlement to bail as affirmed by the High Court. He insists that his prolonged detention is a violation of his rights and denies being a fugitive from justice.
