Roman Catholic Church Woman Takes Youth to Court Over a Position in Church

Harare | Yesterday, a woman in the Roman Catholic Church said that she received death threats about a church stance from a group of young people in her parish.

In a disagreement over a church position, Mercy Ndawana claimed that Nancy Muchabaiwa, her daughter Mellisa Tendai Zindoga, and her friends Rodwin Tawaya and Jonathan were harassing, insulting, and spreading untrue accusations about her.

She requested that they be subject to a peace order.

Nancy grouped together with other women from the church, and they would constantly make threats against me.

“Rodwin threatened to murder me and said he intended to make me disappear, so he instructed his brother to contact me.

“Mellisa called me a nasty lady, and after we had a conversation, my son’s girlfriend reported the incident to the Machipisa Police Station.

“They falsely claimed that I ought to quit from my position and went to the church elders,” Mercy stated.

The young people who were charged refuted the accusations, claiming that Mercy had made fun of them because of their standing in the church.

“She got into a fight with my daughter and her friends, and they applied for a peace order, which they later retracted at the church elder’s request, but I never insulted her,” claimed Nancy.

“I am surprised with this summons because she is the one who insulted me at church saying havatongwi nevana because I was given a leading position at church,” Rodwin said.

Along with their denial of insulting Mercy, Mellisa and Rodwin said they were taken aback by her taking them to court.

The case was rejected by Magistrate Sharon Mashavira due to its lack of merit.

Magistrate Mashavira stated, “Parties appear to be at odds over a church position.”
