Total Energies’ Reputation at Risk After Fuel Blending Scandal

A Total service station in Hwange’s Baobab neighbourhood has come under scrutiny after being fined $500 by the Hwange Magistrates’ Court for breaching fuel blending regulations.

This incident raises questions about the company’s adherence to industry standards and its commitment to delivering quality fuel to consumers.

The court heard that on December 27, 2024, the service station unlawfully blended unleaded petrol with more than 25 percent ethanol, exceeding the legally mandated ratio of 80 percent petrol to 20 percent ethanol. The improperly blended fuel, valued at $17,880, not only violated the law but also posed potential risks to motorists who rely on proper fuel composition for optimal vehicle performance.

This case is not an isolated incident. Just last week, COMOIL was fined US$250 by the Lupane Magistrates’ Court after it was found guilty of selling petrol with ethanol content exceeding the legally allowed limit. The company breached E20 ZWS 964 standards, which cap ethanol content at 20 percent. The violation was detected during a routine inspection by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) on December 6, 2024.

Samples collected from COMOIL’s Lupane station revealed ethanol levels above 50 percent, a stark deviation from the regulations. The Zimbabwe Standards Authority (SAZ) later confirmed the findings, leading to the sealing of tanks containing the non-compliant fuel.

These cases highlight growing concerns among motorists about fuel quality and its impact on vehicle efficiency. Many drivers have long complained about fuel inconsistencies, which can lead to mechanical problems, increased maintenance costs, and reduced engine lifespan. The recent violations by prominent fuel suppliers like Total Energies and COMOIL underscore the need for stricter monitoring and accountability within the fuel industry.

While Total Energies has built a reputation as a reliable energy provider, this breach suggests that even industry giants are not immune to regulatory failures. Consumers deserve transparency and adherence to established standards to ensure they receive the quality fuel they pay for.

As regulatory bodies continue to crack down on non-compliance, fuel suppliers must prioritize integrity and customer safety. Incidents like these serve as a reminder that reputation alone is not enough—consistent adherence to regulations is what truly builds trust in the long run.
