Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique Denies Reports of Protests Following October Elections

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda, has dismissed reports of protests following Mozambique’s disputed October 9 elections. Speaking at the Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government in Mt Hampden on November 20, Matemadanda clarified that what was being described as protests were actually looting incidents targeting supermarkets.

He stated, “The Mozambican people are smart and confident in the election results. They are not bothered by the so-called protests, which are simply criminal acts of looting.” He emphasized that he did not observe any demonstrations, but rather organized groups engaging in looting.

Matemadanda also refuted claims that Zimbabweans participated in Mozambique’s elections, labeling videos suggesting so as fake. He added, “During my travels, I did not come across any Zimbabweans voting in Mozambique.”

The Mirror had reported earlier that hundreds of Zimbabweans, including two of its journalists, were involved in Mozambique’s elections at a Masvingo polling station.

Since 2004, Mozambique has allowed citizens residing in various countries, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, and others, to vote in general elections from abroad.
