The Commissioner-General of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS), Dr Moses CN Chihobvu, has challenged the Service’s top-performing netball side to prioritise education and personal development alongside their sporting success.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the ZPCS Correctional Queens following their outstanding performance at the 2025 Rainbow Amateur Netball League (RANL) Awards, Dr Chihobvu applauded the team’s achievements but emphasised the importance of preparing for life beyond sport.
The Correctional Queens enjoyed a stellar season, clinching the 2025 RANL championship title while also dominating individual honours. Their leading shooter scooped the Golden Hand Award and was named Best Player of the Year, while the technical team earned the Coach of the Year accolade.
Despite the success, Dr Chihobvu warned that a sporting career is limited and urged the players to equip themselves academically and professionally.
“You have made us proud and elevated the ZPCS name,” he said. “However, sport has a lifespan. It is important that you develop yourselves intellectually and professionally so you remain valuable to the organisation even after your playing careers.”
He highlighted that ZPCS promotes sport not only for competition but also for discipline, wellness, and personal growth, encouraging athletes to take advantage of educational and vocational opportunities within the Service.
Dr Chihobvu also tasked the team with taking an active role in the fight against drug and substance abuse, positioning them as role models within their communities.
“You inspire many young people, especially girls. Use that influence to advocate against drug and substance abuse. Discipline on the court must translate into discipline in life and in service,” he added.
The Correctional Queens’ dominant run at the 2025 RANL Awards reinforces their position as one of the leading teams within Zimbabwe’s uniformed forces, with ZPCS pledging continued support for disciplined and responsible athletes.
