Angry Zimbabweans Descends On GALZ LGBTI Offices In Protest!

Harare, Zimbabwe – June 9, 2024: GALZ, an association representing the LGBTI community in Zimbabwe, has strongly condemned the acts of vandalism and intimidation that occurred today at their Harare office around 3:30 pm.

A group of individuals claiming to represent various Christian churches attacked the centre, chanting anti-homosexuality slogans and vandalizing the property by painting hateful graffiti on the walls.

In a statement, GALZ emphasized their respect for differing values but asserted that vandalism and intimidation against communities with different beliefs are utterly unacceptable.

They have filed an official police report and are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations, urging authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable for their criminal actions.

“This act of violence is not an isolated incident,” GALZ stated, highlighting it as a stark reminder of the ongoing discrimination and hostility faced by the LGBTI community in Zimbabwe.

The organization called on religious and political leaders to condemn such acts of hate and uphold the constitutional rights and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.

GALZ also appealed to Zimbabweans to engage in open and respectful dialogue to address differences, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring LGBTI people are treated as equal citizens in Zimbabwe.

“Such attempts to deny our existence will not discourage us from further advocating for our rights,” the statement concluded.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges and prejudices faced by the LGBTI community in Zimbabwe, and GALZ remains resolute in their mission to champion equality and protect the rights of all citizens.
